Consequences and Punishment

From The Draft Repository
Jump to: navigation, search

This is a fairly restrictive setting. Because of how this is set up, your character can be caught and will be punished in accordance with the laws. Not everything will be deemed execution worthy, but the major crimes such as male homosexuality and infidelity. This article will only go over things with a wide paint brush.

As mentioned in the Realism article, your character can be killed off if they are caught. That being said, we encourage you to be creative about how you break the laws. Don't do things in public that will cause us to haul your character off. Keep things hidden cleverly, and try not to be high or drunk in public.

OOC REPORTING

At any time, players are welcome to pm the mods about suspicious activity. Suspicious activity must be in a public place. It has to be something that an NPC passerby/government surveillance/nosy neighbor could spot.

HOW CAN MY CHARACTER BE CAUGHT?

If your thread is in a public place, regardless if it's marked private, it can be dropped into by the Consequences, Random Event or The Trust accounts. These accounts will be used to warn you that your character might get caught. Ignore the warning, and take your chances, or heed the warning and keep your character safe for another day.

The Trust and Consequences accounts should be treated as if someone dropped into your thread. For instance, we'll have a nosy neighbor walk by or a police officer will drive by. The Random Event account will be more in the nature of a wrench thrown into your thread and cause you to adjust. For example, a large dog snaps his leash and comes running over to bowl you down.

The Trust and Consequences accounts will never be used in a private place like the housing developments, but Random Event can be used anywhere. Public threads are always fair game.

Other players might also turn your in via their characters. Be careful whom you share secrets with.

HOW DOES ANOTHER CHARACTER TURN SOMEONE IN?

The most important thing to remember is that OOC knowledge is not IC knowledge. If your character wants to turn someone in, then they must gain the knowledge of their activities via a thread on the board. It must be IN CHARACTER.

So, your character knows something and wants to do something about it? That has to happen IC too. Your character will have to call the cops and report the other character. When you do that, you need to have the admin involved (via pm) so we can use the correct account to haul the non law-abiding character away.

DO I HAVE TO GET THEIR CONSENT TO TURN THEM IN?

It would be polite, but no. You are in charge of your character. However, as admin, we believe it is only fair to involve them in all of the IC threads. If they refuse, then contact an admin, consequences can't be ignored.

YOU CAN'T JUST KILL MY CHARACTER!

Yes, the government can. When you joined, you should have read through the information we provided so that you could understand the world better. The government can and will execute a character (with or without permission) if they continue to tempt fate and ignore consequences.

WHAT ABOUT CHARACTERS WHO, ACCORDING TO THEIR BIOGRAPHIES, ARE BIG LAWBREAKERS?

Bios are OOC knowledge. Secrets are still secrets. However, if we find out about those secrets IC, then we can bust them on it. If we catch you having an affair, then you will be punished for it. Just remember that the bad things have to happen IN CHARACTER for us to do anything about it.

SO MY CHARACTER IS IN TROUBLE/GETTING EXECUTED. NOW WHAT?

You got caught and taken away. Naughty Naughty. Your character will be taken to the Correctional facility. What happens there depends on the crime and punishment meted out.

TEMPORARY TIME SPENT IN CORRECTIONS

Not everything will get you executed. Sometimes, you will just spend some time in "jail". A light punishment might be "re-education". This consists of sitting in a room and watching videos on proper behavior and history and what might happen if you continue to behave in your current fashion. Brainwashing is alive and well in The Trust world.

Violent crimes will get you locked in a dirty, dark cell without light or food or any comforts. Time in said cell will vary depending on the crime. If you are there for more than three days, then they will feed you, after all, you can't learn your lesson if you're dead.

EXECUTION

Major crimes of an immoral nature warrant execution. If you have money, you can fight the courts, but if there is overwhelming evidence that can't be disputed, you're going to face execution.

Said character will be locked in a solitary cell with creature comforts. You will be allowed to say your goodbyes to family and friends (under supervision). This is where you will live while your trial continues. When your time is up, you are given a last meal of your choice, and then receive lethal injection. You can have family witness or not.

WHAT ABOUT CHARACTERS WHO ARE PREGNANT?

Once the child is born, the woman will be executed. The baby will be put up for adoption if the father’s family doesn’t want it.

NOT GUILTY

The admins will play judge, jury and attorney for you. If your character was turned in and you'd like to fight it, come up with the evidence to give them a not guilty verdict. You need to be creative and put your thinking cap on. Figure out how they afforded a lawyer and what their alibi is.

BOTTOMLINE

If your character is killed, they don't come back. They are retired and deceased. The Trust are pretty ruthless, and if you ignore the rules of the setting consistently, then you will eventually get caught. Be creative with your law breaking! Pay attention to Consequences if they show up in your thread.

CORRECTIVE LEARNING CENTER

The most minor of crimes will land you in a room with a desk, chair and television. For the next eight hours, you will be subjected to instructional videos on proper behavior. If these videos end before the eight hours is up, they repeat. At the end of this time, you will be given a test that you must pass with a score of 100. If you don’t pass, you keep watching until you do.

The next level is a holding cell. This can last anywhere from 24 hours to 2 weeks. This punishment is meant as a cooling off period. This is used for abusive husbands, people that get in fights and people that cause property damage. Once your time is up, you are released back home. There are two bunks in each cell, and the cells face each other down a long hallway. There is no privacy.

Women don’t get a separate facility. Most of the time, they will be able to place her in her own cell a few down from any men that might be occupying other cells. If crowding is a problem, then she might find herself surrounded by men, or in very rare cases, bunking with a man. The guards would take extra patrols to make sure that she isn’t harmed, and every precaution would be taken to ensure she’s not put in with someone violent. However, if she was tough enough to earn time, then she’s tough enough to hold her own.

For the most violent and volatile prisoners, you are put in a solitary confinement cell. These cells are meant for one person. There is a small window that lets in light during the day and a metal toilet in the corner. That’s it. You must sleep on the floor. You are given water and oatmeal like slop to eat. When the sun goes down, you have no more light. Just the darkness and the sounds of rodents keep you company.

Executions also happen here. There is a separate building where those on death row are held. They can visit with family and eat final meals in some comfort. Execution is via lethal injection.
